Detail of a medieval manuscript with central text surrounded by glosses and marginal notations. Text beings with a red and blue decorated initial.

In this presentation, I will examine several manuscripts from the late Middle Ages in which glosses have been extracted, copied elsewhere in temporary or sometimes definitive codices, to be relocated, reassembled, and reused as discrete elements for different purposes. I will advance a thesis about the regulatory power of extraction and reassembly.
