Material Analysis and Production History of Palm-Leaf Manuscripts from the Collections of the University of Pennsylvania Libraries
Since the mid-20th century, codicology, or archaeology of the written book, has emerged as a programmatically multidisciplinary field. However, several disciplines have yet to establish a fruitful dialogue with it. Among these, botany and paleo-ecology still hold a great deal of untapped potential, in particular regarding palm-leaf manuscripts (PLMs). As the predominant writing support for the production of manuscripts in South and Southeast Asia, the material fingerprinting of these manuscripts offers a vital, yet overlooked, dimension to our understanding of their production and history. As a professional botanist involved in manuscript studies, I am interested in plants utilized specifically for the production and conservation of such artefacts. My project aims to investigate and to reconstruct production history of PLMs and to establish practical approach to reveal provenance of PLMs from South and South Asia. This newly emerging research direction sees PLMs as archives of their own history and uses material traces (e.g., plant ashes, tissue micro-fragments, ancient plant DNA) accumulated on the surface of their folios as indicators of their geographical, cultural and time-specific origin. Mathematical methods of data analyses, including the algorithms developed by the applicant, help to perform rigorous verification of the final data interpretation.

Complex Manuscripts in Context: the case study of UPenn Codex 137 and LJS 97
This project aims to contribute new insights into the analysis and study of structurally complex manuscripts through the case study of two codices held at the Penn Libraries: Ms Codex 137 and LJS 97. These manuscripts are linked to the activities of a prolific group of copyists centered around Andreas Darmarios and Nikolaos Choniates (16th century) and thus provide an opportunity to investigate the mechanisms of Greek manuscript book production during the final flourishing period of its history.

Mapping Hebrew Manuscripts (MHM): Harmonizing Metadata and Linked Data Ontologies within the Schoenberg Database (SDBM) Framework
The Mapping Hebrew Manuscripts (MHM) project aims to bridge the gap between fragmented institutional metadata and a unified, linked-data representation of Hebrew manuscript culture. While the Schoenberg Database of Manuscripts (SDBM) provides an unparalleled aggregate of manuscript observations and provenance data, the integration of specialized Hebrew codicological and paleographical descriptors remains a significant frontier. This project proposes to utilize the SDBM’s extensive digital records as a primary "virtual laboratory" to test and refine the Hebrew Manuscript Ontology (HMO), creating a more robust framework for the discovery and analysis of the Hebrew book.

Automated Transcription of Medieval Italian Account Books
During my time as a SIMS Visiting Research Fellow, I will combine my experience reading and transcribing Italian financial records with the University of Pennsylvania Libraries’ ongoing initiative to explore computer-based Handwritten Text Recognition (HTR) tools for manuscript studies. Relying upon my own transcriptions of selected manuscripts from the Medici-Gondi Archive as ground truth, I will collaborate with the library staff who are currently experimenting with the institution’s eScriptorium instance to ascertain whether HTR technologies can produce reliable machine-readable versions of the library’s originals. The goal of this exercise is two-fold: first, to test the feasibility of HTR technologies to decipher these otherwise complex sources, and second, to argue—among other things—that greater attention should be paid to Italian financial record-keeping as an example of a common late-medieval manuscript practice that endured well into the modern age. Beyond the significance of digitally exploring these resources for the fields of manuscript studies, accounting history, or the history of specific industries, even a small sampling from the Medici-Gondi archive proves the potential of these sources for many other kinds of historical inquiry.
